Summary
1: In 1948, Lance's mother was born Rose Anna Whitehead in Lake Providence, Louisiana, to a family of poor sharecroppers. At three years old, she contracted polio and nearly lost her life. The local chapter of President Roosevelt's charity, March of Dimes, raised enough money to fund Rose Anna's full-time care at a polio rehabilitation center in Georgia. Young Rose Anna went to live at the rehab center in Georgia. The rehab center was called Cokie. It was eight hours away from her mother, who could only afford to visit twice a year at most.
2: At the rehab center, Rose Anna was able to access a level of education that the rest of her family had been denied. By eight years old, she regained the use of the hands and arms and renamed herself Anna. Every year, Cokie would make a special Christmas...
