Summary
In Pages 120 - 177, because Ivan and Malina are going away, the narrator decides to visit the Altenwyls in Salzburg.
In Salzburg, the narrator spends time with Atti, Antoinette, and Christine. The narrator dislikes how Antoinette talks about Malina. While everyone is having tea, the narrator wanders around. She visits the Mandls next door, a couple "who get more American with each passing year" (126). Everything they do and say conjures some memory for the narrator.
During conversations with her companions, the narrator thinks about how boring they are, longing "to go to...bed" (132). The next evening, the narrator and Atti go out on the boat. The experience exhilarates the narrator. The narrator realizes she will soon "miss each of these days terribly” (137).
One night, she sneaks "into the large parlor to the telephone" (137). She wants to talk to Malina. She wants to go home...
