The Island
The island is where Le Redousse is located. It is an island made up of silt that has accumulated in the Rhone River in the Camargue region of France. It is here where a significant portion of the action of the novel takes place. It is notable for its harsh weather conditions and its remoteness from human society. The island, as well as some surrounding area on the mainland, constitutes Cornelius Malicroix's property, which he leaves to Martial Megremut in his will.
