Summary
In “1975,” after June’s funeral, Hud said that he could not believe their father had not come. Kit asked if they really needed him. Nina hugged her and said they did not. Even though Hud was not sure he believed that, but the thought that they had everything they needed in that room made him feel better.
The next morning, Nina thought about going surfing, but wondered if she would be betraying her mother. She realized she had to model the behavior she wanted from each of them. When she woke them, she handed them their wetsuits and told them they would depend on each other and the ocean to survive.
They lived off the proceeds of the restaurant. Nina was only seventeen, but her school principal promised her that as long as she made it look like an adult was taking care of them...
