Lemon plant

The cherry tree Jeremy and Verna plant symbolizes the beauty of new growth and life as well as the power of patience. Jeremy is initially impatient with the speed at which the lemon plant grows until Verna teaches him that the plant will grow steadily at its own rate if dutifully attended. When Jeremy learns this lesson, the tree grows and produces lemons.

Verna's mother

Verna's mother serves as an example for the importance of forgiveness. Even though Verna's mother views Jolly as a negative influence on her daughter, she opens her heart as the novel progresses and tries to be understanding of Jolly's circumstances and the difficulties she has faced in her life. Her decision to care for Jeremy when Jolly is at the hospital with Jilly, and the warmth that she treats him with highlights her growth and pursuit of kindness.
