Point of View
Maizy Chen’s Last Chance is written in the first person perspective from the point of view of Maizy, the protagonist. Because it is written in the first person, the reader only knows the thoughts and feelings of Maizy. This makes the story more intimate as this perspective gives insight into her experience as she encounters this new place with relatives she barely knows and with citizens who are strangers who become friends.
The first person perspective also allows the mystery that eventually develops over who stole Bud to play out in real time. This is because the reader does not know any more than Maizy, herself, does. The reader does not have any clues that Maizy does not have, and the reader is able to put the clues together either on their own or at the same time Maizy does.
