As Stephanie moves through different living situations of her own throughout the book, she is also exposed to the various houses and homes of her clients, prompting her to reflect on the nature of home. Much of Stephanie's personal journey throughout the book is about finding a true home of her own, in both the physical and emotional senses. She begins the book in a literal state of homelessness, living in a homeless shelter and about to move into transitional housing. In addition to dealing with the practical realities of poverty and homelessness, she also has to negotiate the emotional and psychological consequences of not having a home and a sense of belonging to a place.
