Summary
Stephanie Land and her daughter Mia are living in a homeless shelter; this is where Mia learns to walk. Stephanie is doing everything she can to access government assistance as their ninety-day stay in the shelter is coming to an end. She has no family or friends who can help her financially. She has also struggled to make things work with Mia's father, Jamie, but his abusiveness has left her a single parent. Stephanie's mother and her husband, William, are visiting from their home in Europe and help Stephanie move from the homeless shelter into a transitional apartment which is part of a housing program. There is a deep emotional divide between Stephanie and her mother which emerged and grew larger after her parents' divorce.
