Reason Cansino
Reason is the main character of the book. The story is told mainly in first person from her point of view, but it does switch occasionally to either Tom or Jay-Tee's perspective. Reason is a fifteen year old girl who has been brought up by her mother, Sarafina, on the move in the outback in Australia. Reason's mother is a white woman from a rich family, and her father was an aborigine whom she has never met. Reason and Sarafina have spent their life hiding and running from Esmeralda, Sarafina's mother, who is trying to claim custody of Reason. Reason enjoys her wandering life with her mother, and she loves Sarafina dearly. She wants to stay with Sarafina and resents Esmeralda for getting in the way of this.
