Fires are raging in Los Angeles when Julia goes to the courthouse at the beginning of the narrative. The fires represent her life in Los Angeles which is going up in flames due to the lawsuit against her and the end of her romantic relationship.

Max likes to face danger through his mountain climbing expeditions. He feels that risking his life in this way makes him feel alive. However, these expeditions symbolize his avoidance of life because he finds the uncertainty involved in relationships too painful to face. Once he decides to accept the call to become a better version of himself by opening himself to romantic love, he sees the stupidity in his risky mountain climbing activities.
