Point of View
The narrative uses the third person perspectives of Julia, Ellie, Alice and Max. This is appropriate as the narrative chronicles the hero’s journey that each character takes. As such, each character needs to tell their own story because their changing view of the world shows their growth. For example, the narration shows Alice’s growth by narrator calling her Alice instead of Girl. No other character would be aware of this significant mental shift. In addition, as multiple characters are taking this journey, using the third person perspective as opposed to the first person perspective makes the various journeys easier to follow.
