Summary
The first three sections introduce the plot of the trilogy thus far. The first section, “Egg” (3-5), tells the origin story of the Crakers in the second person. We learn that the creatures were made inside of a large “egg,” which is a lab facility.
The second section, “Rope” (9-22) is told from the perspective of Toby. Toby and Ren have left the cobb-house, which is where the remaining human race lives sheltered from the world. They have been tracking Amanda, another human, who had been kidnapped and raped by two Painballers. Painballers are men who, prior to the fall of humankind, would compete in gladiator-like tournaments for the benefit of the elites. Since the downfall of humanity, the Painballers began their own group in order to loot and steal any remaining resources like medical supplies or food...
