“Mad Girl’s Love Song” takes place within the landscape of the mind. The speaker employs the contrast of darkness and light, dreaming and memory, to illustrate the infinite potential and fractures of the inner world. The poet uses the powerful repeated line “I think I made you up inside my head” (Line 3) to illustrate both the power of creation and the fallibility of this place. Although the poem was written in the 1950s, the internality of the setting gives the poem a timelessness that anyone can recognize, regardless of their generation or cultural background.
