Summary
In Chapter 9, Charlie and Miranda make plans to rearrange their apartments for Mark’s arrival until they can afford the new house. Adam begins transcribing Gorringe's confession. Miranda is anxious the report will lead to a trial and she will have to face Mariam's family. Charlie distracts her by talking about Mark.
Worried Miranda will be found guilty, Charlie asks Adam to edit the transcript to cover for her. Adam talks instead about another Adam who destroyed himself. He tells Charlie his love for Miranda is keeping him alive.
Though political turmoil increases, Charlie remains preoccupied with his own affairs. Adam refuses to reveal the details of his report, which he has not yet filed. Charlie pays a deposit on the house. Just before Mark's first visit, Adam takes a bag and goes for a walk. Charlie is surprised how different Mark seems...
