Maddie's Apartment
Maddie’s apartment represents Maddie’s growth as a person and character, and is the most significant setting. However, it also represents the theme of microaggressions, and how as a Black woman in London, Maddie will always be an other - even when she is in her own apartment. Maddie moves out of her childhood home in Chapter Ten, and moves in with two roommates who are both white women - Cam and Jo to a three bedroom flat with them in Wandsworth, London. Her room is already furnished and is bigger than her room at home. When Maddie moves in, she writes her “New Maddie List” - signifying this new residence is marking her life transition as well.
