In Chapter 6, Regan goes to the Materas' house to babysit. After Elise and David leave, Cody shows Regan his G. I. Joe and Mirelle sets up her Barbies, making Regan think they fit gender expectations. People accept others as long as they move along their own gender scale, but Liam was born off both scales; he is a girl, but his body betrays him.
