Summary
In Chapter 4, when Lucy was with Bob, she “was always okay-feeling” (168). When she was with William, she remembered their old relationship. She also “felt an increasing sense of comfort” in his familiarity (169). Sometimes she listened to music and remembered David, too.
The girls called Lucy “less frequently” (169). William encouraged her to “let them be” (169). Lucy recalled the last time she saw her mother. Their conversation made Lucy believe she was jealous of her relationship with her daughters (170). Although she tried not to worry, she missed the girls desperately. She longed to see them, but they never suggested visiting.
William started helping Lois’s nephew Joe with parasites on his potato farm. The project energized him, while Lucy “felt older every day” (172). She remembered her mother saying everyone “needs to feel important” (172).
