Chapters 1-2 Summary
This is the seventh novel by bestselling author Carl Hiaasen. Hiaasen was born and raised in Florida and hence his choice of placing his novels within the setting of Florida provides an authentic and touching portrayal.
In Chapter 1, JoLayne Lucks buys a lottery ticket, as she has done every Saturday for five years, with numbers that correspond to the age that she is when she breaks up with six different losers. Near Miami, Bode Gazzer and Chub also buy lottery tickets whose numbers are chosen randomly by a computer. Bode and Chub hope to win the lottery to finance their white supremacy group. On Saturday night, JoLayne Lucks and Bode Gazzer both discover they have each won half of a twenty-eight million dollar jackpot.
