Summary

Chapter 7 resumes in 2008. Lucky buys a bus ticket for California. She stops in a hotel that is hosting a couple of conferences. She attracts the attention of a businessman attending conference. She steals his watch, wedding ring, and wallet, then leaves the hotel to catch a city bus. She imagines he will feel so guilty about almost cheating on his wife that he never reports the theft and never cheat again. She pawns the ring and watch. Though she really needs more money, she does not pawn her cross necklace, knowing she is not ready to give up on the hope she will someday find her mother. She boards a bus to San Quentin.
