Summary
At the beginning of the next chapter, “Mildred, Five Months Later, May 1956,” Mildred says she missed a lot of school the previous fall and there was a period of time in which she did not see Richard often. Now she is attending school regularly and seeing Richard. One evening, Richard asks Mildred to sneak out of the house. They meet at the designated spot. They run through the woods, wade in the creek, and sit on a log where Richard tenderly kisses her. When she returns home and gets into bed with Garnet, she is hot and sweaty. It is only then that she realizes that she and Richard never said a word to each other.
