Feldbordell No. 232 Ost
The field brothel, No. 232 Ost, in the setting for the majority of the novel's events. After being selected as a prostitute at Auschwitz-Birekenau, Skinny is transferred to the brothel, and spends 21 days there, working as a prostitute with upwards of 12 soldiers per day. A number of the other girls working there are executed; however, Skinny is able to leave with the German retreat and then escapes from the marching columns and finds help to get false documentation that keeps her safe as she returns to Prague.
Auschwitz-Birkenau
Auschwit-Birkenau is the concentration camp to which Skinny and her family are sent after spending time in transit at Terezin. Her younger brother, Ramon, is sent to the gas chambers immediately, whereas she and her parents are put to work. Skinny's mother is randomly chosen to go to the gas chambers some time later, and her father commits suicide...
