Skinny has already experienced her mother being chosen at random to fill a quota in the gas chambers, and so she is aware that if, having worked for Dr. Kreuger, she was intended to be sent to the gas chambers next, her disappearance would only mean that someone else would be randomly selected to take her place. In choosing to stay alive herself, she is aware that she is causing another person to be killed instead.
