Chicago
Much of the novel takes place in Chicago, Illinois, which has a large black population and a history of heavy racial segregation. Atticus lives on the South Side of Chicago, as do his friends and family. Although Chicago did not have Jim Crow laws like the American South, the novel demonstrates how Chicago (and, implicitly, the rest of the country) still has a history of racial oppression/segregation.
Ardham
Ardham is a fictional town in Massachusetts. Its name is similar to Arkham, which is a fictional Massachusetts town created by H.P. Lovecraft. Ardham is where the Order of the Ancient Dawn is based. The Order lures Atticus to Ardham by kidnapping Montrose. The Order then tries to use Atticus as a ritual sacrifice, but Atticus, George, Montrose, and Letitia manage to escape.
