Summary
Horace returns to his normal life. To make money, he works an after-school job delivering groceries. In one white woman’s house, he notices a Black Pete figurine, and it seems for a moment to move. One day, Horace plays with his friends at one of their houses, and they find an “African Pygmy Devil Doll” (323) in the attic. Horace notices the doll move, but none of the other kids see it. When Horace tries to tell the others, he has a sudden coughing fit, passes out, and wakes up in a hospital. He recovers quickly, and his father George brings him home. One night, Ruby is babysitting Horace. Horace devises a guessing game in which he can tell Ruby some of what has happened to him without being seized by the coughing.
