Summary
Montrose goes into a restaurant one day and finds Caleb Braithwhite there. Shocked and angry, he sits with Caleb, who is apparently expecting him. Caleb asks Montrose to help him since he paid off the debt in Adah’s ledger. Montrose points out that paying debt that is owed is not a favor and that Montrose owes Caleb nothing. Caleb wants Montrose to go to Aken, Illinois, where there is supposedly a copy of a magical book called The Atlas of Untrod Paths. Montrose can tell by Caleb’s evasiveness that the book’s current owner, Henry Narrow, may be dangerous. Caleb threatens to use his police connections to attack Montrose’s loved ones if Montrose does not comply.
