Summary
After Atticus, George, Montrose, and Letitia arrive back in Chicago, a lawyer contacts Letitia and gives her a large sum of money that is apparently for a debt owed to Letitia’s now deceased father. Letitia and Ruby decide to use the money as a down payment on a boardinghouse that they could operate for profit. However, doing so will be difficult due to the extreme racial discrimination in the country’s real estate laws. They go to see a black real estate broker, and they are surprised to be met by a white realtor named John Archibald who says that he can help them. He shows them a large, opulent house that could be used as a boardinghouse. The house was owned by a wealthy white family named Winthrop.
