Summary
In Chapter 6, Elsie gives a teaching demonstration at MIT in front of Monica, Volkov, and Jack. One student, Cole, interrupts her to ask what the point of theoretical physics is. Elsie realizes she is speaking to a class full of experimental physicists and thus decides to kiss up to them. She says that theorists need experimentalists and that the key to physics is collaboration, not competition. Her spiel appeals to her students’ egos. They laugh at the physics pun she concludes with. Elsie feels she is winning against Jack already.
After the teaching demonstration, Elsie meets with the dean of the School of Science, then attends an informal lunch, then partakes in one-on-one interviews with several of MIT’s physicists.
