Stargirl Caraway

Stargirl Caraway is the unique protagonist of the novel. She is a seventeen-year-old home-schooled teen who has just moved to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania after leaving behind all her friends and comfort in Mesa, Arizona. The most important person Stargirl left behind is her ex-boyfriend, Leo, whom she wrote this entire novel to. Stargirl is not given much physical description and is characterized almost solely by her personality, particularly her acts of kindness. When Stargirl arrives in her new neighborhood, she seems to recognize loneliness in others and reach out to them, perhaps because she is battling loneliness herself. Stargirl's friends are a motley crew of outsiders, but Stargirl manages to wrangle everyone into a close-knit community. Throughout the novel, Stargirl partakes in many strange behaviors, solely because they bring her joy: from starting a gardening business to helping her father on milk runs, to building a solar calendar...
