Los Angeles is where Joan is living when she first sends a letter to Imogen in 1962. She describes it as a vast city with numerous different cultures and cuisines to explore. This is where Joan meets and falls in love with Mateo Rodriguez and where she initially works at the Herald Examiner. Imogen also meets Joan for the first time in Los Angeles by surprising her at Joan and Mateo's favorite breakfast spot. Eventually, Joan leaves Los Angeles for Mexico.
