Quran
The Quran is a symbol of rules. Yasmin refers to the Quran as a rule book. For instance, she notes at one point that the Quran forbids sexual intercourse while a female is menstruating. Yasmin also notes that Arif is not much of an Islamic activist because he has broken many of the rules of the Quran, including respecting his parents and not having children out of wedlock.
Bush
The “bush” (2) is a symbol of the differences between Joe and Yasmin’s families. In this case, Arif refers to Harriet’s pubic hair that is shown in a nude photo she had taken to support female rights and sexual freedom. While Joe’s mother is open about sex, Yasmin’s parents never talk about sex or even allow programs showing kissing or sex to be watched on television.
