Summary
In Chapter 49, Joe was angry and insulted when Sandor told him that he was a victim of covert incest. Covert incest is described as: “the term used when a parent turns a child into a surrogate partner but doesn’t touch them sexually” (210). The parent, in this case, Harriet, made Joe feel favored and special because she shared things with him about her relationships and claimed that he was the only one who understood her.
In Chapter 50, Yasmin still had not told Joe about Pepperdine. She did not know how to explain it to him. In the meanwhile, she tried to encourage Joe to get Harriet to tell her mother it was time to go home. Joe asked Yasmin if she thought her parents would get divorced. Yasmin told him she did not think there was any way that could happen.
