The author explores the individual's role in affecting political and social change through his first person narrator's attempts to advise his grandson, Robbie. Though the reader does not have access to Robbie's original email, the narrator alludes to its contents throughout his letter. Robbie has written to his grandfather, asking his opinion on whether or not he should help his friend, J., with her current legal troubles. Though the narrator believes that Robbie is well-intentioned, he wants to "advise and implore" him not to get involved with J.'s business (5). He believes that "discretion and caution" are more important than "courage" (5). He believes that helping one's friends is vital, but is also convinced that Robbie's "involvement will not help...and may, in fact, hurt" J., Robbie, and Robbie's entire family (5).
