Robbie's Grandfather
Robbie's grandfather is the first person narrator of the short story. After receiving an email from his grandson, the narrator replies in the form of a handwritten letter. Because of the delicate nature of the topic they are discussing, the narrator believes handwriting his response is the safest manner of communicating. Throughout his letter, the narrator empathizes with his grandson's desire to help his friend in her time of need. However, he also urges Robbie to be careful. He does not know if involving himself in J.'s legal concerns will actually help. He even suggests that Robbie's involvement might endanger J., Robbie, and Robbie's entire family.
Though the narrator desperately wants his grandson to stay safe, he also understands how hard it is to choose inaction and silence over courageous action. He uses his own life experiences to appeal to Robbie, and illustrate his understanding.
