Claire recognizes that 9/11 is an opportunity for people to be better. From the moment the planes crash, people are being generous with each other, offering free water, free shoes, and other necessities within a culture firmly planted in taking advantage of opportunities to make some money. Yet nobody sinks to that level. People keep rising above, again and again.
Each individual carries his or her own reality of the events of that day. This novel looks at the challenges of finding ways to feel less alone. Strangers talk to each other everywhere as events unfold. Jasper and Amanda are confronted with a waiting line around the block full of people who want to give blood. Claire wanders into the darkness and finds comfort at a makeshift memorial. She finds even more comfort when she can light candles with someone else - a common, shared act. Peter finds community...
