Summary
The novel is narrated in first-person past by the protagonist, Phoebe. In Chapter One, she arrived at the house in Florida her father left to her and her brother at two in the morning after driving all day. Her father had passed away six months ago, and Phoebe was planning to spend the summer fixing it up his house with her brother, Conner, so they could sell it together before school started in the fall. The only thing Phoebe had brought with her was her luggage and a giant Victorian desk, which she had strapped to the roof of her car. She contemplated how to get the desk inside, but then a strange man appeared out of nowhere and asked her if she needed help.
