Frozen blueberries
The frozen blueberries that Jaehee keeps in the freezer for Young in Part I are a symbol of the strong bond of friendship between these two characters. Young explains, "After seeing me snacking on frozen blueberries, she always stocked the freezer with bulk-size bags of frozen American blueberries" (13). In return, Young buys Jaehee her favorite cigarettes, Marlboro Reds. Knowing and catering to a person's preferences is a sign of caring, and Young and Jaehee clearly care for one another. At the end of this section, Jaehee has moved out and Young discovers there are no more blueberries in the freezer, a symbol of the end of the friendship.
