Spain is where Martha and Ernest first begin their relationship while reporting on the Spanish Civil War. It is where Martha witnesses a young boy die in the street, which has a profound effect on her personally and in her writing.

Cuba is where Martha and Ernest live together. It is where they both write and spend their marriage. It is also where Martha gets to know Ernest’s three sons.

France is where Martha sneaks onto a hospital ship during D-Day and is able to report about the invasion during WWII. Martha is arrested after being discovered on the ship the next day.
