Summary
In "Clementinum," the chapter begins with a description of Frank Jackson's thought experiment What Mary Knew. Jackson wondered if there is "some other quality of experience that is not definable in physical terms" (107).
The narrative shifts back to Rachel and Eliza's story. Eliza prepares Arthur for school. Feeling unwell, Rachel dons several layers and wishes she could say what she needs to Eliza. Her wife and child leave. Rachel considers the difference between her intellectual tempo and Eliza's. She thinks about Greg's theories of human versus computer intelligence. "Computers couldn't make the sort of quick decisions that humans were capable of making because they lacked emotions" (109). Rachel thinks her emotions only slow her down.
