Summary

The following morning, it was revealed that Granny had only paid for one room. Granny volunteered Louisiana to sing for the church organist in exchange for the room. At the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Louisiana met Miss Lulu, the church organist who had curly hair that fixated Louisiana, and who was condescending to her. However, when Louisiana sang, she felt uplifted and as if the world could become a better place through her voice. Both Bernice and Miss Lulu were overcome by emotion over her beautiful voice and gave her angel-food cake.

After her audition, Louisiana snuck into the office of Reverend Frank Obertask to use the phone to call her friends in Florida. Her hope evaporated when she realized she did not have their numbers. Her interactions with the phone operator were not fruitful and she hung up the phone defeated...
