Summary
Chapter 30 occurs in Eliza’s perspective in May of 1917. While her mother works with the Belgian war relief, Eliza occupies herself with Russian committee efforts, including helping Princess Yesipov gather food and supplies for the Russian women still living in the boarding house. Thomas drives Eliza to the Meadow Club, a gentleman’s organization that Henry had once been a part of. She hopes to arrange more jobs for the émigrés and rouse support of the women among club members. In the context of mounting war deaths, Thomas informs her that he plans to enlist.
Eliza comes across Merrill and Anna Gabler at the Meadow Club. Anna informs Eliza that she cannot attend dinner due to a club function. Eliza says she had not received notice of the event and Anna tells her that she has been removed from the mailing list...
