Summary
In the first section Part II, "Deportation," the narrative shifts to the first person point of view of the boy. He addresses his account to his sister, Memphis, and describes watching the children board the plane.
Back in the car, he thinks of telling his mother that he understands why she was angry about the deportation, but does not. He remembers how their family used to be, realizing the end of the trip will mean the end of their family.
When they arrive in Truth or Consequences, their mother reads the Elegies aloud. In the fifth elegy, the children encounter a hanged man in the jungle. When the children cannot sleep because of their fear, one boy tells the others a one line story to calm them.
In the car, the boy tries making sense of his father's inventory of echoes project...
