The Inevitability of Change
An individual's life never stays the same forever. The physical self naturally changes with age, and relationships also mutate with new experiences throughout life.
Lorna Mott Dumas is making a big change in her life by moving to America, a change prompted by the infidelity of her husband, Armand-Loup Dumas. Armand has often been unfaithful, but his recent adventures have become increasingly costly. The emotional cost is seen in Lorna's inability to continue their relationship knowing that Armand is being unfaithful. The financial cost is that Armand, who has gotten older and heavier, is spending more money to attract the attention of young women. As the novel comes to a close, Lorna returns to France and rekindles her relationship with Armand.
