Automaton

The automaton is a symbol of accomplishment. After Abbas and Du Leze create the mechanical tiger, Abbas sees it as proof of his skill and potential. This is why he later becomes so determined to procure the automaton from Lady Selwyn. He thinks that bringing it to Godin will prove his accomplishments in the past and grant him status and significance in the future.

Tiger

Throughout the novel, images of and allusions to the tiger are symbolic of power. The tiger figure in the automaton, for example, is representative of India. This is why Tipu Sultan wants the tiger to be attacking the man in the automaton structure, so as to prove India's power in spite of its colonization. Tipu Sultan also sees himself as a tiger, thus assuming the animal's associated power and strength.
