Srirangapatna, Mysore
Srirangapatna, Mysore is one of the novel's primary settings. The sections "Srirangapatna, Mysore: 1794" and "Srirangapatna, Mysore: 1798 - 1799" are entirely set in this location in India. At the time that these sections take place, Tipu Sultan is the ruler of the Mysore kingdom. Before moving to the Summer Palace to work for the sultan and with Du Leze, Abbas lives in Srirangapatna, outside the palace, with his parents and brothers.
In the section "The Siege," Srirangapatna is invaded by English forces. The region was formerly colonized by the French. Following the English victory, England assumes control of the region. Tipu Sultan dies during the siege. Countless residents are killed. Abbas survives the siege, but is forced to leave his home city thereafter.
