Importance: When Tipu Sultan originally summons Abbas to the Summer Palace, he is terrified that he has done something wrong and the sultan plans to punish him, or worse. Although he is grateful to learn that Tipu simply wants him to help Du Leze design and construct the automaton, this new arrangement disrupts the entirety of Abbas's life and world. In this scene, Abbas is overcome by confusion, trepidation, and worry. He knows he has no choice but to accept Tipu's plan, but also feels sad to leave his home and family. The moment introduces the author's considerations of home and belonging, displacement and dislocation.
