Summary
Chapter 5 opens with the narrator in a good mood, reading horoscopes and thinking about astrological signs and where she and Jonás would eat if he were there. The narrator thinks about the different types of scales and whether or not she is “the idea I have of myself” (36). Again, she contemplates the stairs. The narrator reflects on a phone call with Jonás and whether or not poets use poetic voice in other languages. She regards a notebook as a “symbol of freedom” (40) and considers that “violence has scales” (40).
In Chapter 6, the narrator has just argued with Jonás on the phone. She thinks about Ana, Jonás’ mother, and how she would have liked to have met Ana and how much she loves Jonás. The narrator wonders if she is “getting closer or am I getting further away” (44). Again, she...
