Paterson is one of the most populous cities in the state of New Jersey. Joseph is born in Paterson in 1918. His parents work in a local mill. Joseph despises his parents for their boring sense of routine. Joseph exercises his own sense of independence by committing petty crimes around town. After graduating high school, Joseph leaves Paterson to begin a life on his own.

New York City

New York City is the most populous city in the United States. After leaving Paterson, Joseph travels to New York City. He lives in a rooming house and works as a grocery delivery boy. He also has a brief sexual relationship with a maid he first meets in a park. Joseph, abhorring routine, soon leaves New York City to seek adventure elsewhere.
