Freedom
This theme is something that Teddi’s father directly tells Teddi about when she’s growing up. The theme is largely shown through Teddi growing up and acquiring her own business. Teddi’s mother tries to push her into a job field that she isn't interested in. Teddi is trapped and feels like she has no choice, until her father gives her a bunch of money and a car. Teddi is able to leave the farm and use her new-found freedom to pursue her dreams, and is eventually able to start her own business.
The theme is shown in the opposite way through Teddi’s mother. Teddi’s mother is shown as constantly being miserable and even borderline suicidal. Teddi never understood why her mother was so unhappy. She eventually talks to her grandmother about it and discovers more about what happened. When she was younger...
