Summary
In “You Someday Lucky,” Crosley’s “new coworker and his wife” invite her over to do the Enneagram (49). The Enneagram is “a personality-diagnosing system” based on numerology (49). Though Crosley is skeptical, she accepts the invitation. They determine that she is a nine like them. The following week, she and her coworker get into a fight “over something minor” (50). Furious, he calls Crosley a six. Feeling sorry for herself, she tears open her fortune cookie from lunch and it falls into her coffee. When she fishes out the fortune, the only words remaining are: “You someday Lucky” (52). She carries it with her for many years, eventually losing it “in a foreign city” (52).
In “If You Take the Canoe Out,” Crosley’s friend Margeaux invites her to stay at her house in Russian River, California while she visits family...
