Summary

In “Then,” Mickey and Simon began seeing each other outside PAL, going places that Simon did not think they would be recognized. One of the places they met regularly was an abandoned pier over the Delaware River. Meanwhile, Kacey was getting deeper into drug use. Mickey tried to hide what Kacey doing from their grandmother, but Gee knew what was happening. When she found evidence of drug use, Gee kicked Kacey out of the house. Simon told Mickey that Kacey was just testing them. He showed her a tattoo of an X on his leg, explaining that he had gone through a stage during which he used drugs as well.

Mickey wanted to go to college, but Gee refused to fill out the financial aid information. In despair, Mickey paged Simon. She started crying when he answered because he sounded irritated...
